Sulfur (“Leviathan Cross”)

A symbol for the alchemical element Sulfur, (Brimstone) which is spiritually analogous to the human soul. Alchemically, sulfur has the qualities of masculine, hot and dry. Combined with Mercury (feminine, cool and moist), the pair were considered the parents of all metals.

Alchemical drawings often portray Sulfur as the sun. (In some views, sulfur and salt are the parents of Mercury) The symbol of sulfur is often used as an identifying symbol by Satanists, due to sulphur’s historical asociation with the devil.

This glyph is often referred to incorrectly as the “pontifical cross of Satan” by Christian tract writers, due to its adoption as an emblem of Satanism by Anton LaVey in the 1960s. The emblem has no history as a symbol of Satanism outside of LaVey’s usage, and the attribution is most likely a product of anti-Catholic sentiment, as it is often compared in this context to the Catholic Pontifical Cross. A more common symbol for sulfur is a fire triangle surmounting a cross of earth:

I do not believe it’s evil unless you yourself apply evil to it.

Hi, Ive always led a very catholic lifestyle(Albeit a far from good one), I hang around quite dark social circles(Metal, Goth, Occult etc) I’ve always been very strong of mind, quite resistant to brainwashing etc I started drawing symbols in preparation for a band I was putting together, a lot of the lyrics in my band are peaceful with great intentions – some of them aren’t, I started creating this symbol, I didn’t know what it meant, it came from turning an ampersand on its side/Hoobastank and sticking a cross on it!It wasn’t immediate, it was an evolution, I eventually ended up with this symbol….Are there any positive meanings of this symbol? I heard somewhere it represents the triumph of good over evil?

If you knew what Satanism was about you would know that it is very kind, it’s morally strong and all around not bad. The symbol itself has no more meaning than this description. I don’t want to force you to do anything but please visit the church of Satan website, check out the 11, and both 9s. Each a sin, a rule list, or another but read them please.

“Depicted on the bottom is an infinity sign (∞), and above is a double cross (‡). The Double cross symbolizes protection and balance between persons. The infinity sign underlines the constant and infinite nature and most likely symbolizes the eternal universe, this may have been used by Anton LaVey in The Satanic Bible to as a mockery of the cross, to show that humans are their own centrum of balance, and truth. This is what the ideology of Anton LaVey and the followers of the Church of Satan believe, and this is what this symbol represents in this association.
An upside-down crucifix, however, is not a symbol of Satanism. That would be referred to as “The Cross of St. Peter” since, according to Origin of Alexandria, Simon Peter was crucified upside down.” So it does have a very positive message, and it can best be compared to the manji and swastika, as symbols that had very positive messages, but were then taken and used as symbols of evil.

I’m not sure about the alchemical symbol for sulfur itself, but in medieval traditions the salamander – which is commonly associated with sulfur – stood “for the righteous person who never relinquishes peace of soul or trust in God in the midst of tribulation” (Penguin Dictionary of Symbols).

I have heard that the common symbol (the triangle over the cross) was also linked with another meaning, I believe it was tied to a symbol for a specific god or something.. I dunno. I saw this symbol in a dream many years ago and I am still trying to tie it together with why it became so important. Are there any other meanings or uses for this particular symbol? I want to say (and I know this is an unreliable source due to its context) that I was watching Ancient Aliens one night and they tied the symbol to an ancient symbol for Venus.. or something. any thoughts? Ideas? Comments?

For the first time, i know what the symbol that my dad burned into his woodcarving means. He was not overtly spiritual and he thought it was just a cool way to sign his work. His initials were HD Hawkeye Drake. I miss my father dearly… I am a pagan healer (i try to be) and i was born under mercury… Also an extremist. Syncronisity is amazing when you get a hold of it.

I enjoyed reading these conversations.I can’t help to smile from the curiosity of evil. It truly does exist, and it has lived within some of us and at times close to us day and night

Is there any information about whether Satan can use or ask God for sulfuring people.
Their is a verse in the Bible that says God uses sulfur on the people who worship the beast. Along with many other like God letting Satan test one of Gods servants and burned up sheep’s and servants.

Is this from revelations? Or from Job>

Zed September 25, 2017 at 11:46 pm

Well Satanist don’t believe in the devil, it’s basically atheism with magic and shit, the Christian faith is waaaay more fucked up than our faith if you could call it that.

Hell ya King Diamond ;P It took me 14 years after I thought about getting a tattoo to finally get one. We were drunk and I let my roommate do it. His first subject. He never finished it, and it took me several months before I finally figured out that it was possibly never meant to be finished. The top half is filled in dark, the bottom light. A type of balance, which is what I strife to understand. Plus in alchemy, sulphur is read as one of the three primes: Sulfur (fluid connection between the High and the Low). Even though the actual symbol apparently is a triangle on top of a cross, LaVey had a reason to adopt it, and it fits.

Hello,

Browsing through your website was great.

I am a medical doctor from Baroda. It is here that a Guru – Shrimaan Nrusinhacharyaji has set up his Ashram.

Based upon the book Mata the Magician by Isabella Ingalese, one of His disciples has put forth a work titled YOGINIKUMARI, lit. a female Yogic adept wherein chapters devoted to alchemy are preset,

For experiment purposes I am trying to get my hands on 1 kg red sulphur. Could you suggest me some genuine sellers?

Yours truly,

Dr. Anurag Gumashta

Thought for the day: Thank God, it could have been worse! :)

Alex December 10, 2014 at 9:26 pm

You sir, should not be practicing medicine.

hailey grim February 21, 2018 at 3:36 pm

In what way by what he is saying, should he not be able to participate in that kind of practice. Correct me if i’m wrong, but it seems he is just experimenting. Is that wrong?
