Hieroglyphic Monad (Monas Hieroglyphica)

The Monas Hieroglphica (Latin, ‘one glyph’) aka the hieroglyphic monad, is an emblem proposed originally by Athanasius Kircher and expanded on by Dr. John Dee for his sixteenth century treatise on the creation of a mystical symbolic language of the same name. It is an emblem of the Azoth, or Philosopher’s stone, the aim of alchemy.

The figure is based on the Egyptian Ankh and contains symbols of the seven planets/alchemical metals:

The sign of Aries, signifying fire:

A cross representing the four primal elements of earth, air, water, and fire:

The sign of Sol, the sun:

A lunar crescent:

The symbol appears in other places, notably, the “Speculum Veritatis,” or Mirror of truth, and Opus Medico Chymicum, alchemical texts.

I wake up in the morning feelin’ like I’m John Dee
Got my black magic book and drew a circle round me
Bitch, I wake up in the morning feelin’ like I’m not me
I’m a beast, I’m a killer, I’m a young Crowley

The planets move… these symbols are trying to remind you how…

This is for Steve Collier….the symbol for Saturn is what appears to by an ‘ h ‘ with a crazy design. To be sure any “high level” occultists know this…it just appears YOU do not!
Love and Light to you….

to be truthful…pretty much ALL of these symbols have been hijacked and used for purposes with which was NOT their original intention.

The deception (if there is one, which is diputable) is only to mask the fact that the original name for the symbol is Shaitan, which “high level” occultists will usually translate as Saturn. Of course this is also where the word Satan originates and it suited certain orders to distance themselves from what would be considered ‘Devil Worship’. As many of us dispute the existence of one omnipotent god it seems unlikely that we would consider the possibility of a spiritual adversary.

It is the standard practice for saturn to be represented by the sickle and has been since the romans I’m pretty sure that they weren’t too bothered about Christian morality.

So although I’m happy to concede that there may have been some deception by Ordo Templi Orientis or other groups regarding some of the sybolic meanings of glyphs, it is of paramount importance that there is an understanding that the use of symbols in Magick is much more related to the intent with which they are used. If you dont have a couldron a coffee cup will do.

Love is the Law, love under will.

The name “Satan” comes from the Hebrew word for “accuser.” Saturn was a Roman deity, and as such we have that name in Latin characters and can verify it’s completely unrelated etymologically. The name for this symbol was, likewise, originally written in a script not too hard to translate into English and barely even touches upon Saturn.
The actual symbol for Saturn looks like an h, as was used by astrologers and alchemists. As an actual devil worshiper, we have other symbols that we use in adversarial alchemy. While this symbol is technically neutral in the fact that it can be used by a wide variety of pagan occultists, it’s fulfilled by other symbols in our work.
Blessed be.
