A modern representation of the Web of Wyrd, the matrix of fate (wyrd) as woven by the Nornir, the fates of Norse legend. The emblem, nine staves arranged in an angular grid, contains all of the shapes of the runes and therefore all of the past, present, and future possibilities they represent. The web of wyrd serves as a reminder that the actions of the past affect the present and that present actions affect the future; all timelines are inextricably interconnected- in a sense, it is a representation of the tree of life.

I want to get a tattoo of the web of wyrd, i was wondering if the orientation affects the meaning. If i get i in a horizontal way, will it affect?
Can i learn the language somwhere? I really want to understand it better.
Hello,
I’m sure that I reserched on here before that it is an Anglo Saxon symbol hence the use of Anglo Saxon runes…?
Thanks!
well, I see the same shape everywhere but I cant find the “original” source of the web of wyrd, can someone tell me? there are mentions of the web on the eddas but I cant find a solid old norse saga with that drawing.
Hi Victor- as far as I’m aware this is a modern Asatru idea, not a canonical symbol (as it were)
What if I were to get this tattooed as a ring going around my finger. Could the ends connect or should it be left open? I’m just wondering because I don’t want to mess with the cultural aspect of this symbol.
I would just have it going up and down
That depends on your preferences.
The number 9 was the most sacred number to the norse people
3 and 3 and 3
in this symbol (the allrune) there are 9 lines placed in groups of 3
there are 9 worlds of yggdrasil
odins magic ring ‘draupnir’ would drop 8 duplicate rings every 9 months (making 9 rings each time)
this also coincides with the 9 months of human pregnancy
the ‘valknut’ has 3 triangles, each obviously has 3 points which makes 9 points
the more you look into it the more you will see the number 9
Wyrd is an experience related to Carl Jung’s synchronicity
When it comes to burning trees, avoid Elder, Yew and Oak. Birch and Ash are sacred, so try to use dead and dry fallen limbs of Spruce, Fir, and Pine. Please allow for the fact I live in New Zealand and I’m pretty sure our Birch is different to Northern Hemisphere.
Old Anglo Saxon Asatru generally uses the term “Vala ” for a female “Godia”, a priestess skilled at healing, leading ceremonies, casting the Seid (ball of light and healing) and a familiarity with the Runes. It is not normally a term applied to male “Godi”, or priest.
yes, the seidr were almost always women however there were male versions who were often seen as feminine as the use of the wand/distaff was representative of a phallus
odin himself however was a practioner of seidr (as he was the seeker of knowledge of all magic) and was mocked by loki for it.
so yes, commonly female but not exclusively
Ken Paskaruk, as an asatru myself, i feel confident in telling you that there is no “correct” or “universal” way to walk Down the road of a vølve (old norse seer practicing shamanism, sorcery and prophecy). if it feels right in your Heart you are doing it right. the best advice i can give is this:
the spirits in the earth, Woods, Mountains and so on, are very ancient and you can learn a great deal from them. Word of advice though. only use dead trees for firewood. DONT chop Down a living tree amongst the spirits. it would be the same a levelling your house while you were looking at it for them, and their anger is great.
A man’s own hand is most to be trusted. (Viga Glum’s Saga, c.4)
i hope your friend find the path he seeks
My question is this a friend well in the mountians was taking pictures of his camp sight and when viewing the pictures later he found that his pictures contained images that were not present when taking the pictures. He discribed the images as spirits coming out of the plants, tree’s and circling in the sky. He is interested in learning more and returning to the same sight to invite the spirits to dance with him around the fire. Any info or links to sights that I can forward him would be helpful
